Metalheads: What Your Favorite Metal Sub-genre Says About You
Power Metal. Death Metal. Black Metal. Classic Metal. Progressive Metal. Doom Metal. Thrash Metal. What do these metal subgenres have to say about your moral code? Today, we’re diving into one of the most fascinating psychology studies I’ve come across—especially if you’re a fan of metal music. This research explored how different metal subgenres attract fans with distinct moral reasoning styles—and how those moral frameworks, along with personality traits, shape the kinds of lyrics we’re drawn to. Using Moral Foundations Theory, we will uncover what science has to say about our moral code, based on our musical preferences. We’ll walk through each profile—what lyrical themes fans connect with most, what moral values they prioritize, and how it all ties into the broader cultural and emotional impact of metal, whether you are into Dream Theater, Slayer, Megadeath, Morbid Angel, DragonForce, Opted, Tool, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Darkthrone, Candlemass, Rammstein, Meshuggah, Saint Vitus, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or anything in between. Spoiler: the results might challenge some long-standing stereotypes about extreme music. Study Citation: Messick KJ, Aranda BE.
